Weight Loss and Health Insurance

How to Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Maybe Even Save Some Money on Your Health Insurance

There are many advantages to losing weight. Some of these advantages are obvious: a healthier looking physique, increased athletic performance, improved self image, and just a general sense of well-being. However, there are also quite a few outlying benefits to losing weight that you may not even immediately realize. One of these things is the potential for very cheap health insurance.

If you are self employed or you are working for a company that does not provide group health insurance benefits then chances are you are on an individual health insurance plan. (If you are participating in your employer’s group health insurance plan then you still may be able to save a small amount of money by losing weight but in reality for the effect to really be felt you would have to convince many of your co-workers to join you in the weight loss effort as group rates are levied as a whole not on an individual basis as in individual health insurance). If you are on an individual health insurance plan then the positive thing is that you are paying about half the cost of what you would pay on a group health insurance plan (unless of course your employer was chipping in for some or all of the monthly premium!). The negative thing about individual health insurance is that much like life insurance; all applicants have to go through an extensive underwriting process that scrutinizes (typically) the last 10 years of medical history. This is fine if you are perfectly healthy but can be an expensive ordeal if you have health issues and are overweight.

The individual health insurance underwriters will look for things like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol, and obesity. Some of these things, including severe obesity, often results in an automatic decline of the application. Other things, including mild obesity, will result in a higher health insurance rate (called a “rate up”). All insurance companies have a height and weight chart that will tell you what your guideline weight is based on your height. Different height/weight ratios will be treated differently by the underwriters and result in either an approval, an approval with a rate increase, or a decline or the application.

These height and weight charts are no reason to get discouraged because they can give us a concrete goal to shoot for that will not only make us live a healthier and happier life but also save us some money in the process! A good solid goal to shoot for is to lose enough weight so that your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 (considered in the “healthy weight” range) and keep in this range for at least 12 months.

You can accomplish this goal if you do the planning that is necessary! Schedule your workout times for the upcoming week and stick to the schedule. Make sure that your refrigerator is stocked with fruits, vegetables, protein bars, and other nutritious and healthy snacks. Our shakes and bars contain glyconutrients so you will be getting a double benefit when you consume them. When you are on the run and pressed for time then try to eat something that is quick and nutritious like our Glyconutrient Meal Replacement Bars or Soy Protein Meal Replacement Shakes. Plan ahead, be disciplined and you will be on your way to becoming healthier, happier, and a little richer thanks to your cheaper health insurance bill!
